One Hot Mama’s

Our first visit to South Carolina brought us to Hilton Head.  We stayed on the island at a nice beach resort with so many places to see.  The main reason though we wanted to come here was One Hot Mama’s.  I watch a lot of Food Network and on one season of The Next Food Network Star there was a Filipino chef in the running named Orchid.  She didn’t end up making it but we saw that she had her own BBQ joint in Hilton Head and we were sold on coming in.

We actually came here twice, the first time was for their brunch buffet which was just a teaser of good things to come.  I’ll focus on our dinner for this writing.

onehotmamas2.jpgOriginally we wanted to order 2 of the Best BBQ Combos and try each of the pulled pork, sliced beef brisket, rib tips, and smoked fried chicken.  Unfortunately they were out of the rib tips, which is a popular item, so we got the pulled pork and brisket together and an order of the baby back ribs with the smoked fried chicken.  Sides of fries, dirty rice and gravy, mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese.

I didn’t know what to expect from the smoked fried chicken but it wasn’t my favorite.  It was good but I prefer my fried chicken to just be fried and leave the smoke to its own process.  The brisket comes next as it was good but not as good as the other two items.  We had the pulled pork at brunch the previous day and that’s one reason we came back to try other items but the star of the night was the ribs.  It is a signature item and award winner and it lives up to all of that.  They were so tender and falling off the bone.  They were injected with flavor and don’t need any extra sauce but you could put some one anyways (more on the sauces later.)

So these sauces.  I tried all four of them and I think they were all delicious.  Which one you want depends on what meat you have.  Our server said the One Hot Asian sauce is best with the chicken wings so we will have to try that next time but from what I tasted it was good and spicy.  Their Perfect 10 sauce is sweet and awesome and is good with the brisket or pulled pork.  The table sauces were also good.  One was a vinegar based sauce which I enjoyed with pulled pork and the other was a mustard based sauce which I also enjoyed with the pulled pork as well as the brisket.  You can order their Perfect 10 and One Hot Asian sauces on their website here and even get their BBQ rub to try.

onehotmamas3.jpgNow I know I said the baby back ribs were the star of the night and they were, for the main course.  Moving to dessert, our server convinced us to try something off the dessert menu and led us to the chocolate pecan pie.  He is my hero.  And this pie was the superstar.  And I am in food heaven.  This was not your ordinary pecan pie.  It was like a pecan pie and chocolate brownie got married and had a delicious dessert baby.  The consistency of the pie itself was not like your normal pecan pie but more like a cake.  However this was brought to fruition, I’m glad I was able to have a piece of it.
